Professor Merrideth Randall has a tool that other historians can only dream of—computer software that virtually rewinds time!

It comes in handy for historical research and for her sideline genealogy business. When her colleague physics professor Brett Garrison asks for help with his family tree she can’t resist, even though he’s far too attractive for her peace of mind. And amazingly, he seems to be pursuing her, despite the fact that everyone knows dating a co-worker is career suicide.

Using her software, Merrideth gets a first-hand look at Brett’s ancestors, the courageous pioneers of the Illinois Country who withstood Indian attacks, hardship, and loneliness to settle there in the 1780s. One of the settlers is James Garretson, who risked his life to take the Gospel to the very tribe that wreaked havoc on his family. Merrideth is amazed that he could forgive a crime so huge.

She would love to tell Brett that he is descended from heroes, and that he inherited his black hair and green eyes from James Garretson. But she is determined to safeguard her program, and discretion is not Brett’s strong suit. She also has secrets about herself that she’d just as soon he didn’t find out either.

One virtue Brett does have is patience, and he’s quite willing to wait for Merrideth to figure things out.

Review of “Journeys of Four”:

When four young people, walking down completely different paths in life, are confronted with what it means to truly be a Christian, they are faced with either repentance and redemption, or a complete rejection of their faith. This is an excellent story, full of depth, truth, and characters you’ll feel sure you’ve met before (they’re that relatable). It moves quietly to a stunning conclusion. This book has a large cast of characters (a couple have somewhat similar names), so be prepared to pay close attention as they’re introduced. 4.5/5 stars* ($0.99)

*I received a free copy of Journeys of Four in exchange for my honest review. All thoughts are my own.

Christine Spurgeon is painfully shy and, at this point in her life, pretty miserable most of the time. When her parents decide that they are going to start attending a new church, she is less than pleased. Much to her surprise, the first sermon strikes home, and Christine finds her sleepy Christianity shaken to the core.

Peter Gottswald, a truck driver living with his younger brother, has started to change. What started out as grief over his parents’ death, moves on to deeply concern his family. As he tries to lose himself in a world of fiction and their worry grows, his family tries to discover what he’s running away from before he loses sight of reality altogether.

Claudius Rivers wants nothing to do with Christianity whatsoever. He doesn’t need it, so he doesn’t bother, beyond going to church with his family. At first, Claudius manages to get away with ignoring just about everyone in the congregation, until an older man befriends him. As he gets to know the man, taking notice of the behavior of the rest of the people in the church, he’s brought to a realization that he must either reject Christ or follow Him.

Claudette Crutch has claimed to follow Christ for years, but that doesn’t stop her from letting her rebellion against authority increase on a daily basis. She thinks that she’s fine, until she witnesses the spiritual transformation of another young woman in her church and she is forced to begin questioning her so-called Christianity.

When will the four paths connect, to where will they lead, and how will they get there?

WHAT READERS ARE SAYING:

“Robbed of Soul is like a Dan Brown thriller but set in the United States involving ancient conspiracies and artifacts of the Native American kind.” – 5 star Goodreads Review

“Murder! Treasure! History! Ghosts! Ms. Brown weaves a complicated and full tale without dropping any of the pieces in this interesting and engrossing story. The protagonist, a trouble woman, is especially well brought to life for the reader.” – 5 star Amazon Review

“Maria Branson is competent and strong, yet also flawed in a debilitating way that makes her not only instantly sympathetic but even funny at times. A plethora of colorful co-characters add humor, charm, mystery, and romance to Kanab’s small-town ambiance that’s shattered when its mayor turns up missing in one of the area’s most forbidding places. Newly-arrived Police Chief Branson, secretly fresh out of PTSD rehab, must tackle it all despite still being plagued by ghosts (literally) from her unfortunate past.” – 5 star Amazon Review

His sister has been arrested for the murder of her fourth husband, and his father is near death. What’s the ghost of Al Capone doing in Dreamland, Arkansas?

Trixie’s willing to live and let live, but Al doesn’t seem to be so tolerant!

Trixie Blake barely remembers her small hometown or the grandfather who left her the Quimby Building on the antiquated town square. Newly-widowed and at loose ends, she treks to Dreamland to look for a fresh start. It takes less than twenty-four hours to discover she’s in the path of a shadowy development company’s plans to take over all of Dreamland’s historic downtown. That is, if they can persuade the three hold-outs to sell and move on. When Trixie decides to become hold-out number four, her already precarious situation deteriorates rapidly.

She finds an odd assortment of allies: the Drummond sisters, two feisty senior citizens who run the Sunshine Style Shoppe on the first floor of Trixie’s building; Rudy James, a former high school classmate (now the proprietor of the Twilight Bar and Grill); Glen Ellard, the long-time mayor who owns the town’s only hardware store; Hetty Green, a retired teacher who keeps her fingers on the pulse of the town; Danny Jefferson, who doesn’t let his Down Syndrome define him; Mitch Langley, whose connection to the development company is too close for comfort; and Candace King, self-appointed head of the Dreamland Historic Association, who knows the town’s dark secrets.

On top of everything else, Trixie’s great-grandfather’s buddy Al Capone seems to be still in residence on the Quimby Building’s second floor. Does he also get out and about to vandalize Trixie’s hotel room, slash her tires, and make threatening phone calls? And why does Police Chief Doug Everton want Trixie out of town sooner than later?

Review of “Battle for the Throne”:

Battle for the Throne is the story of a young woman’s determination to set her kingdom free at any cost to herself. All in all, it is an entertaining read for adults or mature, older teens who enjoy fantasy and aren’t bothered by fairly non-graphic violence as well as women in combat/torture situations. The story is not terribly complicated. Some of the writing is a bit stilted and some of the dialogue a bit modern for the portrayed setting. 3/5 stars* ($2.99)

A Twisty Puzzler Complete with Dogs, Romance and a Backyard Body…Solve the mystery before you die laughing!

Book one of the laugh-out-loud mystery series from Wall Street Journal and USA TODAY Best-Selling author Amy Vansant. If Janet Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum and the Golden Girls had a baby, it would be the Pineapple Port series!

It’s bad enough finding a body in your back yard—especially when foul play is pretty much a certainty. But when you discover the bones are somebody’s long-missing mom, it’s tragic. And if that person is the hottest guy in town, you’ve just made the world’s worst first impression!

Charlotte Morgan’s got every reason to take an intensely personal interest, even if solving a murder’s a bit of a stretch for a 26-year-old amateur sleuth raised in a 55-plus Florida community–golf-cart racing’s usually about as exciting as it gets for her. But things are heating up in her world, and not just in the romance department. The hot guy’s uncle is Charlotte’s number one suspect. He’s debonair, he’s mysterious, he’s just a little too slick—and he’s dating a friend of Charlotte’s. If she doesn’t step up, who knows what could happen?

In Amy Vansant’s first Pineapple Port cozy mystery, quips get flung and puns get slung, making for a hilarious read, but even better, Pineapple Port’s just a place you want to hang out. Charlotte’s a pretty unique female protagonist, being the only chick, as a friend observes, in a roomful of hens, but Pineapple Port is a wonderful character in itself, as much a parallel universe as Hogwarts, with its own exotic customs and quirks. People have nicknames like Jenny Teacup (because she collects tea sets), exercise comes in the form of water aerobics, and Poolside Breakfast is a big social event. Vansant has perfect pitch when it comes to her human characters as well. No one can mention a restaurant without someone saying, “They have the best French toast!”

The Pineapple Port Mystery Series is perfect for fans of those reassuringly cozy mysteries set in small towns, from Agatha Christie’s Miss Marple right on through Carolyn Hart and up to Jana DeLeon. If you happen to like romantic comedy, or even just funny mysteries—especially those with intrepid women sleuths– you’ll devour it!

Tomas Dyrease, the newly made Earl of Irvaine and the village of Wisenvale, owes his good fortune to his king and the recent civil war. When his benefactor demands Tomas marry the cousin of a noble, he obeys. However, no one warned him that she wasn’t a typical noblewoman.

Duty to Others

Brielle Solarius struggles to keep her village from starvation under the new Lord Wisten, her cousin. The men rode off to war and never returned. The remaining women and children face a dire winter if they do not find a solution soon. When she learns her cousin sold her into marriage to save his life, she isn’t surprised. However, she is taken aback by Lord Irvaine’s unpolished ways. Was this man a noble or a foot soldier?

Duty to Each Other

Bound by the words of their vows, they face a rough future. They must forge a marriage while battling betrayal, accusations of treason, and villains from the past. Survival depends on their precarious trust in each other. Failure could mean death.

“I’m Mia.
I know how to write.
Why’s that a big deal?
Because… I’m a cat.”

A goofy, shaggy farm dog is missing. Did he run away? Was he dog-napped? Normally the fate of a dog wouldn’t concern Mia too much, but this one belongs to Keith’s nephew.

As detective and cat dig deeper, they discover there are more dogs missing from the area. Will Mia be able to sniff out the location of the missing dogs—and solve her second case?

A cute, clean mystery for all ages.

Gemma Keyes is an ordinary, unexceptional young woman with a lackluster life until an overheard conversation ends her budding career—and her loyalty to an old friend puts her life in jeopardy. As the truth emerges, Gemma discovers—the hard way—that invisibility comes with its own set of problems.

My name is Gemma Keyes. Other than my name, I am utterly forgettable—so those who never paid much attention to me in the first place haven’t exactly noticed that I’ve disappeared. Vanished. Oh, it’s much more complicated than it sounds. And let me tell you, the adjustment is difficult.

I should tell you about Dr. Daniel Bickel, world-renowned nanophysicist. We used to work together, but I’ll be candid with you: He’s supposed to be dead. Well, he’s not. (Imagine my surprise.) Instead of the proverbial “six feet under,” he’s subsisting in an abandoned devolution cavern beneath the old Manzano Weapons Storage Facility on Kirtland Air Force Base here in Albuquerque.

“I need to show you what I’m protecting here, Gemma,” he insisted.

I stared into the clear glass case. I could hear . . . humming, clicking, buzzing. A faint haze inside the box shifted. Dissolved. Came back together. Reminded me of how mercury, when released on a plate, will flow and form new shapes. Only this, this thing was “flowing and forming” in midair.

“Do you see them?” Dr. Bickel asked.

“Them?” I was confused. My mouth opened to a stunned “o” as the silver haze resolved into blue letters.

H E L L O

Dr. Bickel hadn’t pressed any buttons. Hadn’t said anything to them. Hadn’t gestured.

He grinned. “Ah. They’ve noticed you. They know they haven’t seen you before.”

“Well, I wish they wouldn’t notice me!” I choked on the words, my eyes fixed on the glass case.

And I need to warn you about General Cushing. The rank and name likely conjure images of a lean but muscled old soldier, posture rigid, face cemented in unyielding lines, iron-gray hair cut high and tight.

Let me disabuse you of that impression.

General Imogene Cushing is short and a tiny bit plump. She wears her silvered hair in an elegant braid knotted at the nape of her neck, and she knows how to smile sweetly. With the deadliest of sharks..

You wouldn’t suspect a two-star general, an Air Force O-8, of being a traitor, would you?

Editorial Review

“The author impressed me by backing up the tale with some real science and actual locations. Gemma is one of the most well-developed characters I’ve seen, certainly not one of those comic-book caricatures that are so common now. She has a real personal history and real flaws that blend in well with the storyline.”

The gasps and murmuring grew. Though some were hardly more than whispers, clear words reached Jace’s ears—dangerous, monster, animal, soulless. He tried to back away from their accusing eyes, but the collar pulled hard against his throat and held him in place.

For all his years as a slave, Jace has known nothing but the hatred people hold for his mixed blood—one half human, the other half the blood of a race considered monsters. Always, he is the outsider and quickly learns it is better to keep to himself. Yet, when his volatile ryrik blood leads him to do the unthinkable, he is thrown into a world of violence and bloodshed.

Forced to become a gladiator, Jace finds more and more of his heart dying as his master works to break down his will not to become the monster everyone believes he is. When a stranger interferes with his master’s harsh punishment, Jace’s world is upended yet again. But with it comes the possibility of hope that has long since died. Could the man possibly hold the key to escaping the hopeless darkness that is Jace’s life? Is there such a thing as life beyond the cruelty of slavery?

See where Jace’s story all began . . .

The Agency Files:

Whatever it takes: the motto of “The Agency.” It doesn’t exist–not legally speaking. However its effect in the lives of those who benefit from their aid is incalculable. Lives saved, restored, guarded–protected from the side of life most never see. Their clients are usually wealthy, important–desperate. Their other clients–well, they don’t always appreciate the efforts expended on their behalf–not until they aren’t lying on a slab in the morgue.

Justified Means~

Erika Polowski, in grave danger–danger she has no idea exists–finds herself captive, shackled, bound, gagged. Her captors have the most unbelievable story, yet as the enemy manages, time after time, to get too close, she has to decide who or what to trust. Can she believe the man who daily holds her at gunpoint? Does she trust her gut? She is certain that she knows nothing that could possibly matter to anyone–has done nothing that should put her in danger.

For Keith Auger, it’s just another assignment. Extract the client, protect the client, return the client to her life with minimal interruption. Except that this “client” isn’t so keen on being protected. His usual cheerful demeanor disappeared the night he helped her escape from her home–escape with the aid of duct tape, rope, and the dark of night.

His faith seems incongruous with his job. Her feisty personality might just keep her alive–if he can’t. How long can they stay one step ahead of their pursuers? How long can he protect her when every move they make seems only half a step behind those who want Erika dead. Why can’t they get a break?

The only answer is the one thing that he fears most. Is there a mole within The Agency?
